Dear Owens Valley Family,
The 2019-20 school year is here! On behalf of the Owens Valley staff, I extend a warm welcome to our new students and families and a warm welcome back to our students and families who are returning to Owens Valley. Even though most of our staff was off for the summer, everyone here has been busy getting ready for a new year of rich experiences for our students- in and out of the classroom. This dedication to our school community is one of the many reasons why Owens Valley is such a special place.
I am proud of the work that was accomplished by our teachers, support staff, and students during the 2018-19 school year and am energized and ready for us to build upon that foundation this year. Some of the highlights of the past year include the outstanding, student-centered instruction that happened in every classroom, every day; enhanced communication with families and the community via our new Facebook page; numerous educationally enriching field trips and experiences for our students throughout the year, including a 6-day trip to Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah for OVHS students and a district trip to view the King Tut exhibit at the California Science Museum. Our students demonstrated good citizenship and truly lived by our pillars last year with respectful, safe, responsible, problem-solving, and kind behavior. Finally, thanks to the efforts of our facilities team, our buildings are sparkling clean and our grounds are groomed and ready for the first day of school.
Although our successes are many, there is always room for improvement. One area where we need to grow as a school is attendance. Student attendance is undeniably linked to academic achievement and the development of habits that will transfer to the workplace and higher education. It is my hope that we can work together to improve our schoolwide attendance rates to instill lifelong habits that will serve our children during their TK-12 school career and beyond, and I thank you in advance for sharing in our commitment to improved attendance in 2019-20.
On another note, there are some changes that you should be aware of for 2019-20. First, we will be serving a before-school breakfast this year from 7:45-8:00 a.m. Please be sure that your child arrives at 7:45 a.m. if they are going to have breakfast before school. Our bus and van schedules have been updated to allow students to get to school with enough time to eat an unrushed, leisurely breakfast if they choose. Please do be aware that students may only eat once before lunch, either the early morning breakfast before school or the second chance breakfast at recess time. If your child will eat the early morning breakfast, you may want to pack them a snack for recess time. As we stated in the flyer sent home in June, dismissal for middle school (grades 7 and 8) is changed to 2:30 p.m. this year. Finally, we have some staffing changes for the new school year. Mr. Mack, who you may know is a licensed attorney, has given up his teaching career to return to practicing law full time. We are so sad to see him go and wish him the very best in his new adventure! Please check our Facebook and Instagram pages in the coming days to “meet” our new employees and learn about changes to some of our staff members’ assignments.
High School parents, please be advised that there will be an orientation beginning at 5pm for parents and new and returning OVHS students. Please join us in the LC for this very important, informative session which will feature a presentation by Kim Blackwell from Cerro Coso Community College as well as an opportunity to meet Mr. Ron Simmons, our new OVHS teacher. Dinner will be served at the orientation, so bring your appetites as well as your questions for the staff!
It is my continued honor and privilege to serve the Owens Valley community, and as we prepare to begin another amazing year’s journey of growth and learning I would like to thank all of you for your ongoing support and encouragement. As always, my door is open to our parents, families, and students. Together we shine. GO CUBS!
